Telemedicine: Current and Future Perspectives

Telemedicine is a health-care delivery concept that enables distant patients especially in rural areas to be examined by the physicians using telecommunications technologies. It is given that majority of population dwells in rural areas in developing countries that represent the largest patient base of variety of health issues. Access to basic healthcare, doctors, and treatment is hardly reachable. Telemedicine has gained tremendous popularity in developing countries where rural population is deprived access to even basic healthcare. Presently telemedicine is proving extremely viable and feasible solution reaching out to rural population and bridging disparity in quality and access to healthcare between urban and rural regions. The telemedicine market has witnessed spectacular growth lately mainly because of convergence Information technology Communication Healthcare. This paper examines the current state of telemedicine in developing countries. It further discusses telemedicine implementation cases, lessons learned from the cases, and concludes with potential researchable critical success factors that account for the growth and modest successes of telemedicine. The paper also briefly discusses about the advancements in implementation of telemedicine in developed nations.

Ryhan Ebad has a distinguished career as a senior consultant for US based companies and has rich international industry experience of over 14 years in variety of domains. He has played a pivotal role in introducing American firms to Indian markets for business opportunities in new and renewable energy, especially solar energy. Ryhan has been the enabling interface of success between private and public sectors during his previous assignments. He has been a key point of contact between the government and corporate managing over 3000 Common Service Centers for egovernance (Telecentres) initiative by the Government of India. During the beginning of his career in Silicon Valley, USA he was responsible for managing over 100 startup companies from all across the globe in a business incubator center located in the heart of Silicon Valley. He was instrumental in tie-ups and developing outsourcing models for companies intending to seek global reach. He has also served in various capacities of senior level executive roles in California, USA. During his tenure with Bell Canada and American Express, he was responsible for designing results oriented sales strategies. He was a core member of the team developing new products and involved in handling critical business processes and process improvements. He is a graduate of AMU, India, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Masters Degrees in Operations Research and Computer Science and Applications. He earned a Masters degree in Management Information Systems from Strayer University, USA. He holds a Masters degree in Business Administration with marketing major. He has also accomplished a Doctorate degree in Computer Science. He is a member of various societies and groups and traveled to over 10 countries around the world. Additionally he associates with Principals, Affiliates and Advisors that have over 100 years of combined experience in:  Government  IT  Renewable Energy  Commodities Trading  Managing start-up, high-growth and mature companies He is currently functioning as an Advisor to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Jazan University, KSA and also consulting with the Vice Presidency. He is also lecturing in the Department of Computer and Information, Jazan University.
