Sapwood Oak classification using Global and Local Features

Classification of wood images has always fascinated researchers and is a hot area of research as it brings automation in wood industry. Wood comes in different types and for a given wood; it can have some good part and some bad part like cracks, water affected and sapwood. The objective of this paper is to classify the sapwood region and the non-sapwood region in oak wood image in order to get the good part of the wood (heart part). Color based features and texture based feature extraction strategies were employed and it was found that color based feature extraction techniques are better compared to others in order to find sapwood.

Hammad Naeem
Hammad Naeem received his degree of Master in Computer Vision and Robotics from Heriot Watt University-Edinburgh, University of Girona-Spain and University of Burgundy-France. He was on an Erasmus Mundus program which was funded by European Union. He holds Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Air University, Islamabad. Currently he is serving as a Lecturer in Electrical Department at HITEC University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila Pakistan. He has particular interests in Vision based robotics and image processing based intelligent machines.

Asim Anees
Asim Anees has done Master’s in Computer Vision and robotics. He was funded by European Union for his Master Degree under the scholarship scheme named Erasmus Mundus (Vibot). He holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from UET, Peshawar, Pakistan. Currently he is persuing his Phd degree from University of Tasmania, Australia.

Maria Minhas
Maria Minhas is currently doing his Master’s in Electrical Engineering from University of Minnesota, Duluth, USA. She did his Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from HITEC University, Taxila, Pakistan. She has research interest in image processing and Bio-medical vision based solutions.

Jameel Ahmed
