RFID to enhance visibility in a Closed loop Supply chain: Case of Cylinders Management in a Moroccan LPG distribution chain

Abdelkhalek Nakabi, Zitouni Beidouri and Bouksour Otmane

The challenges highlighted in this paper relate to asset management, distributions performances and customer satisfaction. Emergence of new technologies such as RFID coupled with Vendor Managed Inventory processes gives big hope to success in dealing with these challenges especially in non-mature business environments such as the Moroccan one. This paper illustrates also closed loop supply chain dynamics by a real world case. The case studied is related to distribution of packed LPG (liquefied Petroleum Gas) and discusses some general challenges companies evolving in this business face. Cylinders management, called in some businesses “Metal management” makes LPG distribution business specific as the forwards physical flow is linked to the reverse flow. In fact at different layers of the distribution process from filling plants to customers, the forward quantity of delivered filled cylinders should be almost equal to the empty cylinders travelling upward. As very scarce studies cover Cylinders management in LPG business, we aim to participate for more cylinders management comprehension and explore opportunities the use of information technology gives to enhance visibility through the distribution chain and improve distribution performances.
